Duke of Edinburgh Award
This year we had a huge uptake for Bronze Duke of Edinburgh, therefore there are 2 groups taking part in separate training expeditions and will form a large assessment group in September.
Training began in January with simple map reading and compass skills, with a session on nutrition and campcraft the following week. Students then began accessing their eDofE accounts online, where their award is tracked and I am able to assess them. Many on them have already completed their physical skill and started on their volunteering, accessing a range of opportunities including working at a local food bank, helping at a Primary School after school club and volunteering within William Brookes.
Training will commence in June with the help of a local DofE leader, Irene Stelfox, who will guide the students through planning their expedition routes, first aid and sensible packing of their rucksacks before their expeditions.
The dates of the ‘in house’ training will be:
Thursday 16th June and Thursday 30th June, from 3:45-5:00pm in the CLT. These are compulsory training sessions and students will not be able to take part in the expeditions without having been trained properly.
The training expeditions will then take place Saturday 2nd- Sunday 3rd July for group 1 and Saturday 16th- Sunday 17th July for group 2, around the Stiperstones and Longmynd areas, including an overnight camp and cooking experiences.
Students will then have time over the summer to develop their eDofE accounts before putting their skills to the test in their assessed expedition on 17th and 18th September.
In previous years our year 12 students have progressed onto their Silver Award to complete over their 2 years in William Brookes Sixth Form, however, this year, the group are highly experienced and have been invited to undertake their Gold Awards involving canoeing during the Summer holidays. Dates and details for this are yet to be confirmed.
